Can My Infant Be Harmed by EMF Radiation Emitted by a Baby Monitor?

It is possible. Research conducted on this topic suggests that electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation emitted by a baby monitor could result in significant health issues over time.

Because babies have thin skulls and are small in stature, they are particularly susceptible to the effects of EMF radiation.

However, there are steps you can take now to minimize the amount of EMF radiation your baby is exposed to, greatly minimizing potential health concerns that could develop later in life.

Low EMF Baby Monitors and How They Work

Radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which is a form of EMF, is released by all electronics, including wireless monitors. The safest baby monitors are the ones that emit FM radiofrequency radiation.

Many baby monitor models operate on a high microwave range. This range is the same level and type used by cell phones and Wi-Fi signals. These EMF levels are dangerous to adults. They are worse for kids.

Digital Vs. Analog

There are a couple of signals used by baby monitors: digital and analog. Of the two, analog is the safest, though they are not easy to locate in America. Analog models use an FM radiofrequency, generally at 40 megahertz. Because analog baby monitors are sound-exclusive, there is a reduction in the amount of EMF radiation your infant is open to.

Digital monitors run on frequency-hopping spread spectrums (FHSS), digital enhanced cordless telecommunications (DECT), Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. They operate on a microwave frequency of 2400 megahertz (or 2.4 gigahertz). In contrast to analog models, these frequencies are more hazardous.

If you require features that analog does not offer, consider getting a digital monitor with low emissions, or use a model that has either sound activation mode or eco-mode. Units like these do not release high emissions on a continuous basis. They are only powered-up when sound is detected, offering users a moderate EMF protection level.

The Best EMF-Reducing Baby Monitors (Wireless)

Analog Data Monitors

While analog monitors are the safest option, they are not easy to find. The lone analog monitor I intended to recommend has been discontinued.

Manufacturers who used to make analog baby monitors for the purposes of reducing radiation are few and far between these days. Perhaps there isn’t enough demand for analog models. It is my hope that this will eventually change once more awareness about EMF radiation and the hazards of high radio frequencies are brought to light.

Digital Monitors with Low Emissions

I found a pair of digital models operating at 900 megahertz. While they still emit high emissions, the amount is substantially lower in contrast to the average digital model. Both options come with voice activation.

Babymoov Expert Care: a model with low emissions and an impressive range (2650 feet). This product is activated by sound and costs under $100.

Sony MTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System: a model that comes with alerts, lights, and sounds. It costs just under $100.

Sound Activated Digital Monitors (Video Included)/Eco-Mode

The following options aren’t low emission models (operating at 2.4 gigahertz). With that said, they do provide eco-mode or sound activation options to reduce EMF.

Moonbaby Non-Wi-Fi Voice-Activated Baby Monitor: this model utilizes a direct connection (2.4GHz FHSS) to the receiver and has lower radiation emissions. Voice activation can be set to various levels of sensitivity. If you have concerns about the monitor not picking up, the sensitivity can be set higher. If you have concerns about the monitor constantly transmitting emissions, the sensitivity can be reduced.

Philips AVENT SCD630/37 Video Baby Monitor: this model comes with a 3.5” video screen. Both audio-only and sound activation modes are an option. This baby monitor, which has a night vision feature, can also be mounted on a wall. You can monitor the room temperature with it, too. The cost of this monitor is $155.47.

Our Pick of All Low-EMF Baby Monitors Out There

Nuk Baby Monitor with Eco Control and Video: this option gets its own section because it’s our favorite baby monitor. Unfortunately, it can’t be purchased in America. However, the manufacturer is willing to send it to addresses in the USA, though you should be mindful of costly shipping rates.

This wireless monitor is quite popular in Europe because of its eco-mode feature. According to the manufacturer, EMF exposure is reduced by as much as 90%. The monitor transmits data only when movement by the baby is detected, and as such, substantially minimizes radiation emission.

The Nuk Baby Monitor comes with a handy power-conserving feature, night vision, and two-way communication. Without the cost of shipping, you can expect to pay about 173 pounds for this low EMF baby monitor (which equates to $194 USD).

Hardwiring a Monitor for Optimal EMF Protection

The safest way to protect your baby from EMF radiation is to hardwire a monitor, as Wi-Fi signals are bypassed altogether with this method. An ethernet cable will need to be run through the nursery, but the inconvenience is a small price to pay to minimize EMF levels at home. The monitor you use will require at least one ethernet port, which is hard to come by these days. I was able to find one that is rich with features and reviewed favorably by consumers, though.

MOM&BB Baby Safe Camera Monitor: this monitor comes with two-way audio, night vision, cloud storage, video recording, pan-and-tilt functionality, and a 360-degree perspective on its ultra-high-definition camera. It is even compatible with Amazon’s Alexa.

In Closing

No matter which low EMF baby monitor you end up choosing, make sure that it is far away as possible from your baby, but not far enough that it loses functionality. Your infant will absorb more EMF radiation if they are close to the monitor.

Everyone wants to do what’s right for their children, but sometimes, knowing what to do isn’t clear. With regards to an issue like EMF radiation, though, you can take responsible actions using common sense and by doing some research.

Ever since I started researching EMF radiation and the associated risks of it, finding the ways of protecting the well-being of my family from the harmful EMF effects became my number one priority. In this blog I wanted to share my research of ever increasing risks of EMF radiation that surrounds us every day and how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones. I hope you find the information useful.
