If you are concerned about the effects of the increasing amount of non-ionizing energy present in the electromagnetic energy fields (EMF) surrounding us, you have no doubt done a lot of research into how to protect yourself and your family during your waking hours.
But if you’re like us, you’ve noticed that there’s very little information on the effects of EMF while you sleep and likewise on the nighttime choices of protection available to you.
And while it’s easy to find companies that specialize in EMF shielding clothing, it requires a bit more digging to find information about EMF-bedding. And so, we have compiled a buyers’ guide of sleep canopies designed to protect you while you sleep.
But first, a few words on how EMF surrounds and affects you while you are sound asleep.
The Value of Sleep
Sleep is a necessity. That’s why we spend 1/3 of our lives asleep. A good night’s sleep allows both your mind and body to revitalize so you can perform whatever the next day asks of you. Conversely, if we are deprived of sleep or our sleep is disrupted, our quality of life, as well as our health is affected.
Studies have shown that depression, irritability, increased tension, and confusion can all result from poor sleep quality. And as if this were not frightening enough, if it continues, it can lower average life expectation from 80 years of age to 65 -70.
The number of people who have been diagnosed with sleep disorders has shown a huge increase over the past two decades. In many cases, this can be attributed to noise, malnutrition, or stress. However, it may also be the ubiquity of EMF radiation.
Sleep laboratory studies have shown that, while EMFs from mobile phones and their bases disturb neither the length of sleep or its phases, nor the perceived quality of rest reported by the test subjects, the presence of phones with pulsed radiation shows up on the sleep electroencephalograms taken of the sleeping subjects. The fact that EMFs influence brain activity while sleeping should give us a pause.
And when you consider that this study centered on cellphones and mobile phones and today’s EMF contributors – wireless routers, voice-commanded smart speakers, camera doorbells, microwaves, smart thermostat, not to mention laptops and tablets, all of which bathe our brains and central nervous systems in cell-altering radiation, it’s easy to see why many concerned people turn to sleep canopies for a measure of protection.
Do You Need an EMF Shielding Bed Canopy?
If you or members of your family have cellphones, or your home has any of the above-mentioned smart devices, or is near a power line or cellphone tower, you should investigate EMF shielding bed canopies.
An EMF shielding bed canopy is exactly what its name says it is, a mesh enclosure that hangs from an overhead frame that drapes over and around your bed. If you’ve ever seen a mosquito netting in a film that takes place in the tropics, that should give you an idea of what one looks like.
Most protective canopy manufacturers use natural undyed cotton netting with threads of a conductive material like silver or aluminum woven inside to block most types of harmful radiation.
A word of caution, though, while all brands provide some level of blocking EMF energy, the specific content of the fabrics varies in their ability to do so.
So as is true, when buying anything, it’s best to read the label and literature before selecting a canopy.
Having said that, here are a few EMF bed canopies to look at.
1. Blocsilver EMF Shield Box Bed Canopy
They say good things come in small packages. Well, there’s nothing small about the Blocsilver EMF Shield Box Bed Canopy’s protection ability. Despite its 2-lb weight, this box-shaped canopy stands 6.5 feet high whether you choose the crib/cot, the twin, double, queen, or king size. And it provides EMF protection up to 60 dB for cell tower RF, and Wi-Fi blocking for your entire family.
Manufactured in the United Kingdom from 100% cotton its light weight makes it very breathable, so it won’t interfere with your sleep. And it’s chemical free so you don’t have to worry about its powerful silver-infused EMF wave-blocking fabric causing an allergic reaction.
2. SYB Shield Your Body EMF Blocking Bed Canopy
Measuring a spacious 86.6-in x 86.6-in x 86.6-in (220 cm all around), the SYB bed canopy provides enough EMF blocking material to enclose a king-size bed. And since it comes with two floor mats, it effectively provides a sleep sanctuary, blocking radiation from all directions.
The canopy is made of 100% silver, and the mats of 30% polyester, 30% stainless steel, and 40% cotton, combining to provide protection against 99.9% of radioactive waves with frequencies up to 26GHZ, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G. Plus it does not require grounding.
3. UrGarding Silver Coated Mesh Anti-Radiation Canopy
The UrGarding anti-radiation canopy’s silver coated lining makes it able to repel 99.9% of RF, and EMF, and ELF radiation. And since it is effective at frequencies of 10 MHz to 60GHz, it’s also effective in repelling cellphone signals by notable margins.
According to the manufacturer, it’s safe to use the canopy without grounding, however many reviewers recommend using a ground.
4. LessEMF Dream Canopy
The LessEMF Dream Canopy lets you bring your EMF protection with you when you go on a vacation trip.
Marketed as a portable Faraday cage, it’s made of 100% pure nylon mesh coated with silver, providing robust 30 – 45dB shielding from cell phones and Wi-Fi waves. Supremely packable and weighing less than2 lbs, it’s available in two sizes, twin/cot/crib, and full/queen. It scarcely takes up as much room in your suitcase as a pair of jeans, yet the twin/cot/crib opens up to a 7.5-ft height and 26-ft perimeter, and the full/twin to 8.2-foot-high, 39-ft perimeter. And its tapered top makes it a good EMF shielding canopy for bunk beds.
Since it’s made of mesh, the Dream Canopy lets air circulate freely. Comes with a stainless-steel hanging hook, a support ring, and a ground cord.
5. Naturell Bed Canopy with Swiss Shielding Fabric
Made of naturelle, a 100% natural sheer chemical-free cotton fabric, and insulated with 18% copper and silver conductive thread, known for its superior radiofrequency blocking.
However since it has also been found to be effective at blocking 99.9% of EMF waves with frequencies of up to 40dB at 100MHz (and 99% up to 10GHz), it is a favorite of those who suffer with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) and chemical sensitivity.
Available in an assortment of sizes ranging from single on up to California King and can also be custom made to your dimensions, all made for ceiling mounting. Please note that no hardware comes with it. However, the three 7 to 8-foot hardwood dowels required as well as mounting hardware, and ceiling-to-suspension string are all carried by drapery outlets and hardware stores.
DYI Bed Canopy
Perhaps you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person. If so, all it takes to make an EMF shielding bed canopy is a bit of hardware in the form of a ceiling hook and hardware, and dowels for making a frame. As for shielding fabric, once you’ve calculated the amount needed to enclose, without touching, your bed, there are several manufacturers offering a wide range of skin-compatible, chemical-free fabrics.
Most are made of cotton, and have linings of copper, aluminum, or silver, or filaments of threading containing these conductive metals woven throughout.
Your choices include the following Swiss Shield trademarked fabrics:
- Ultima
- Naturell
- Wear
- Daylite
Blocsilver is another company that offers EMF shielding fabric.
Don’t Trust, Test!!!
Before settling down for a long winters nap, or a summer snooze, you might want to test the efficacy of the EMF shielding canopy you have bought.
All you need is a quality EMF meter capable of accurately reading the amount of electromagnetic, radiofrequency, and ELF radiation present in the air. The TriField TF2 is our choice, but there are other brands you can chose from too.
Once you have the meter in hand, the process is quite straightforward:
- Take a reading inside the closed canopy, and one outside it.
- If the reading inside the securely closed canopy is significantly lower than that taken outside, you can rest assured.
- If not, take a few moments to make sure there are no gaps and that you have installed the canopy correctly.
- If either of these are the case, and you have corrected them, retake the measurements.
- If the difference in the readings is still significant, the radiation may be arising from under the bed.
- One measure you can take to combat it is to purchase EMF protective floor mats and get a licensed electrician to install grounding for them.
A Few Final Words
EMF shielding bed canopies are important for any age, but especially so for infants and children.
Since babies have thinner skulls than adults, their brains and central nervous systems can suffer more harmful damage from Wi-Fi radiation and other forms of EMF, RF, and ELF.
So if your home is like many, if not most of today’s homes, you have many sources or radiation right there in your living room, kitchen, and probably bedroom, as well as the baby’s room if you have an infant monitor, you’ll want to do all that you can to protect your whole family.
One way is to surround everyone’s bed with an EMF shielding bed canopy.
